Diocesan Needs

The basic needs of the diocese fall into the three categories of 1.) people, 2.) financial support, and 3.) prayer.  Generally speaking, the greatest need of the diocese is people.  The diocese is in somewhat of a financial crisis making financial support a very high priority, but giving money for projects without supplying the people to carry them out is almost a moot point.  For a variety of reasons there has been a lack of people in the diocese for the last twenty years or so.  Unfortunately, the vacuum created by the absence of Anglicans has resulted in only several missionary couples doing what had been undertaken by many people in the past.  What is needed, then, is a balance of people and financial support, combined with prayer concerning the same.

More specifically, the three ways interested parties could get involved with the diocese are as follows:

1.) Send short-term missions teams.   This is something which, ideally, would happen on a regular basis, perhaps annually.  When a team takes on a short-term missions project, it is expected that they not only appear to do the work but also fund the project in question.  Regarding a suitable project for a team, the diocese can arrange something tailored specifically to the gifts and aspirations of just about any group.  The group can pick something off the list of projects on the missions needs page or something may be able to be organized which is not on the list.  The bottom line is that there is a great need to have people work with the diocese in person.  It's great from the standpoint of the diocese, because not only does work get accomplished, but the opportunity arises for people to get involved with the life of the Church in other ways and sometimes long-term missionaries arise as a result.

2.) Fund specific needs of the diocese.  As was mentioned above, the diocese is in a financial crisis.  Apart from funding the specific needs involved with undertaking projects during a mission trip, there are other fund-raising needs which are very important.  These needs are listed on the financial needs page, but a few examples include buying Spanish BCP's and Bibles and funding some of the expenses of this ministry.  The work of running this ministry deals not only with helping N. American groups plan and organize work but also assistance in the mission field.  Travel expenses, etc. are thus costs which need to be provided for somehow.

3.) Commit to parish-wide prayer over the needs of the diocese.   The diocese is currently faced with some very serious situations, making it a very critical time in its history.  There is severe poverty amongst the urban churches, there are so few people in ministry that venues once controlled by the Anglican church are now being secularized, the generation of indigenous pastors which was most recently given proper theological education is dying out and there is some speculation if there will be others to replace them, the lack of properly trained pastors has allowed for some churches to come under the influence of trends causing them to lose their distinctive Anglican identity; etc.  These may give one an idea of why simply committing to prayer for the diocese is so necessary.  Please check the prayer needs page for regular updates.
