Devastating Flood Damage

Last year, a number of churches in the diocese of N. Argentina faced devastation.  Around February 21, ten Anglican church facilities and their surrounding communities were destroyed by a severe flood.  Flooding occurred in the region in close proximity to the Pilcomayo river, the border between Argentina and Paraguay. This region is home to almost thirty communities, most of which have been greatly affected by the Anglican church in recent decades. Last year's record rainfall caused unprecedented levels in rivers. Water rose at a reported rate of roughly two feet in twelve hours.

The communities most seriously affected are of the indigenous Wichi, Toba, Chorote and Chulupi tribes. These tribes make up the poorest and often most neglected demographic in all of Argentina.  It is for this reason that the Anglican church has traditionally had such a strong presence in their culture.

Because of the flooding, entire villages have been washed away, including in most cases, homes, livestock and personal effects. Following the flood, the Argentine government announced it would commit to an aid package covering the rebuilding of a number of houses. The responsibility of rebuilding church facilities will fall entirely on the diocese.

As numerous indigenous Anglicans were being left homeless, the diocese sensed the pastoral care needed. Early on, the question of why God allowed this to happen began to arise. Even a year later this remains an important issue as the theme of this query may either provoke deeper growth in Christ or else allow a foothold for the devil.  Let us pray it will be the former. On a brighter note, indigenous pastors announced early on that their communities would begin to rebuild churches before any other new structures.

At this time the diocese requests of its friends and partners fervent prayer, not only for material provision, but also for the spiritual encouragement and enrichment of a people who are generally all too familiar with devastation. Short-term missions trips to assist with relief remain among the greatest needs which will arise in the coming months.  Financial relief for rebuilding the churches which were destroyed is also still needed.  Click here for the relief proposal.  Click here for updates.
